India Post Newly Launched eCommerce Portal – 6 Highpoints

India Post has launched its e-commerce portal, with an aim to ride the wave of online commerce in India. Their plan is to offer rural artisans, self-help groups, women entrepreneurs and public sector units an online marketplace, and leverage its parcel business for end-to-end delivery of products.

According to the Department of Posts (DoP)’s website –, India Post – that operates a network of 1.5 lakh plus post offices in the country, will ship the products sold through (i.e. their exclusive e-commerce portal), via its Speed Post service. On Friday, Minister of State (independent charge) for Communications and Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha together launched this e-commerce portal – this news was announced on Twitter by India Post.

Below are 6 interesting things about this new initiative.

  1. Who Can Sell – According to the Communications Ministry, this portal will provide an e-marketplace to sellers, especially rural artisans, women entrepreneurs, and self-help groups.
  2. Products Offered – Currently, the portal offers a very limited range of products. From cosmetics to clothing, form bags to grooming appliances and much more, the portal is being constantly updated with new products and all of it could gain a lot of traction soon especially the handloom products and tribal crafts.
  3. Delivery Network – Accrediting India Post massive delivery network covering even remote villages through its 1.55 lakh post offices, this new portal does have an edge i.e. enviable reach, something that big players like Amazon, Flipkart, and Walmart cannot match.
  4. Seller Registration – According to the Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha, “India Post is open for registration of all vendors for e-commerce business. It will pick up products from vendor and deliver to doorstep of customers,” Registration of sellers on this portal is free for 6 months.
  5. Product Returns – If the customer is not happy with the product, they can always return it. India Post Secretary AN Nanda said, “We will also facilitate return of products service like it is available for customers on other e-commerce platforms.”
  6. Delivery Charges – The Department of Posts (DoP) has reportedly set a discrete parcel directorate, who will be deciding on the rates of the parcels and other related issues.

In the meantime, Mr Sinha also launched a refurbished website for India Post. This newly revamped website intends to fuel the department’s digital reach across all new devices, including mobile phones.
